Anderson Area YMCA Sprint Triathlon 2006

The Anderson Area YMCA Triathlon went off under perfect weather conditions on Saturday morning @ 8am. Sixty competitors from around the Upstate showed up to challenge a very tough sprint course. The race is time trial start (1 person starts every 30 secs) and consist of a 300 yard pool swim, 12.4 mile bike and 5k run. The course starts off very easy and we had the benefit of a tail wind going North on Hwy 81. However the course takes an ominous turn on mile 7 of the bike. The last 5 miles are up and down and directly into a 10 mph wind. By the time you make T2 (bike to run) your legs are feeling the effort of the last 5 miles on the bike. The run course is not an easy 5 k run. Cruelly it immediately takes you up hill out of transition for about 400 meters before giving relief on the flat section of Hwy 81, Marchbanks, Cornelia and Calhoun Rd.. From Calhoun we make a right on Simpson at mile 2.2 and head straight up a brutal hill on Simpson Rd. If the course hasn't already broken you this hill provides a pretty good knock out punch. The race finishes coming back around the YMCA going under the entrance arch and ending on the lower part of the parking area.

The crowd was great and very enthusiastic and it seems as if everyone stayed until the last competitor crossed the line. EventDVD.net was on the scene video taping the race and I here from some reliable sources that the footage is stellar. All participants of the race will receive a complimentary DVD of the race. It should be great viewing!

Included below is the link to the race results. Congratulations to all those who competed.

Bob Chambers Smokes Lowes Time Trial (27mph)

A couple of our group riders are participating in the Lowe's Motor Speedway 10 mile Time Trial Series this year. The series last through the summer months and brings in some of the fastest Time Trialist in the Southeast. The first race was last night and Bob Chambers absolutely smoked the course. I'm including a excerpt from his ride report.

"So my run went something like this ... a painful grind at 24 mph through the home stretch into the wind (sometimes down to 23), and 30 mph along the back stretch (sometimes up to 31 or 32). That held for the first 3 laps. The 4th lap was a struggle. Then I realized how little ride time was left and I picked it back up. I was blazing on the last lap, but had to deal with lots of traffic.

I finished in a time of 22:12.7 for an average speed of 27.0 mph." bob chambers

Most of us only see 27mph on a steep downhill! Congratulations Bob and we look forward to more reports from the series.

April 8th- Saturday Ride Post

Saturday "no one gets dropped" ride leaving NewSpring parking area @ 9am. The pace will be very casual and we should arrive downtown Pendleton around 9:50 for those wanting to meet us there. If anyone is interested in riding the Anderson Area YMCA Tri course meet me at the YMCA parking area @ 7:45am. My plan is to ride the Tri course then proceed to NewSpring for the group ride @ 9am. If it's raining or rain is in the area I will opt out the morning ride. Some still ride in the rain so if you're comfortable riding in the rain it's up to you. The weather forecast is calling for a high probability of rain and thunderstorms Friday night into Saturday morning. Let's hope the weather system clears the area by Saturday morning.
