Saturday ride Newspring 7:30am 09-02-06

We had talked about the possibility of riding from Belton to the Safe Harbor ride in Starr. However, the few people who know the course can't ride. The Clemson game doesn't kick-off until 3:30pm so we should be fine riding our usual Saturday Course from Newspring.

No-one gets dropped casual ride leaving Newspring @ 7:30am. Will ride from Newspring to the Tuesday night course via Shackleburg and Timm's Mill Rd. Should arrive downtown Pendleton around 8:30am for those wanting to meet there. Some may ride a second loop or at least extend the course to Mac Smith's store. Most will ride approximately 40 miles.

Weather conditions should be ideal with Sunny skies and mid 80's temps.....

Taking it to a new level @ Lowe's Speedway -29.7mph-

Calhoun Falls resident and SVR regular Bob Chambers is on a roll. Starting this year intent on pursuing the art and science of time trialing, Bob has consistently improved his times and, in the process, mowed over the competition. Encouraged by a second place in the 50-54 age group for the 7 laps of Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC (10 miles), Bob soon achieved the age group win and has held on to it ever since. On Wednesday, Bob put forth his greatest effort yet. Facing cooler conditions and a mild, favorable wind, Bob came up with a world class age group performance and shattered his own course record by more than a minute. 20 minutes 12 seconds is the new time to beat (29.7 mph). Even Bob himself was taken by surprise by the momentous result, double checking his bike computer in amazement.Bob is hard at work on breaking the 30 mph barrier (sub 20 minutes) and challenging some of the best time trialists around, including Tennessee's Kent Bostick, 1996 Olympian and multiple National Champion.Congratulations to Bob on seeing the results of dedication. Way to go!

Ryan Robinson takes 5th @ Mt Washington

Ryan lined up between Ned Overend (legendary former World Champion mountain biker) and Tyler Hamilton (legendary for ... well ... er ... ). Tyler ended up taking the win and Ned was second. A Colavita pro was third and some other pro was fourth. I'll flat guarantee you that every other rider besides Ryan in the top 20 is gonna turn out to be a rider for a top domestic or Euro pro team. Ryan KICKED ASS!!!!He said Tyler had his own Tyler Hamilton Foundation team of pro riders who all launched themselves up the mountain from the gun in support of Tyler. Ryan clawed back and passed all of them but Tyler.Ryan said the mountain was relatively tame, weatherwise. 60 at the bottom. 50 at the top with fog and drizzle. Winds were only 25 mph which isn't too bad for Mt. Washington.I asked him if he signed a pro contract before he came down the mountain. He didn't. But who knows what might come of this?Oh, Ryan broke the hour mark for the climb. I may not have my facts straight on this, but if I recall correctly, the climb is something like 7.5 miles at an average gradient of 12.5 %. The finishing stretch is 24% grade. And I think some of it is unpaved! And remember, Ryan was in a cast 2 months ago! Wow!

Thursday YMCA Ride -New Start Time -6pm-

Starting this week the ride will begin at 6:00pm leaving from the Anderson YMCA. This was the majority preference of those of you who have ridden this ride this summer.>> If you haven't been out to join the group for this ride, it's more like the pace of the Saturday ride than the Tuesday night hammerfest from Pendleton. We still like to ride at a moderate pace, but nobody will get dropped. The route will go out Shackleburg to Timm's Mill Rd, and then onto Five Forks for the ride over to Mac Smith's. We re-group at Mac's and then head back to Dalrymple & Scott's Bridge Rd. to pick up Shackleburg again. The distance is approx. 28 miles round trip, however if you're not up to that distance you can always turn around sooner to begin your trek back to the Y.>> I will not be able to make it this week, and with the Vortex possibly still on the DL, a ride captain will need to step up from the ranks of Jonathon, Brian, Bill, or Mike M. >> Any questions, e-mail me at skshuey@bellsouth.net. Thanks! Scott>> (Hope to see some of you Tuesday pm on the Pendleton ride.)
