Ride for 1-1-09

How about a ride on New Year's Day? That's right, weather permitting, we plan to mount our trusty steeds and log the first miles of the new year... We roll out at 0900 on the dot for a ride of about 40 miles... It's a great way to fulfill your New Year's resolution... cuz everyone knows that you are resolved to RIDE MORE... RIDE OFTEN... and RIDE LONG... so, let's get started...
We leave from the parking lot at New Spring... route remains the same...

Let the season begin.... NOW!!!

IronMike's 11 Things to Know

Readers,
IronMike was thinking (yes, he does that every now & again) about your training for your various triathlon & Ironman quests. Of course, this epiphany came to him while he was walking the dog and consuming some liquid carbs. Here's what I came up with.

1. Study, read, listen: but devise your own plan and stick to it. Keep it simple!!!
2. Nail your nutrition early.
3. Know the difference between discomfort and pain. Train through discomfort and mitigate pain.
4. Listen to your body. Rest/recover when needed regardless of the plan.
5. Ensure you get your base. The short, fast workouts are great, but the LSD workouts get you to the finish line.
6. Maintain your equipment regularly.
7. Buy top of the line clothing. Comfort rules.
8. Spend lots of time on the trainer with a long and steady output of RPM's. Forget spin class (unless you don't do what they say!)
9. Participate in sprints and other fun races often enough to remind yourself why you are doing this.
10. Do at least one, if not two, longer distance races to experiment with nutrition and pacing.
11. Realize that the training makes you the Ironman. The race only proves it to everyone else.
So, when you're reviewing what you have to do... keep these in mind...
Train Long, Train Hard & Train Often.

12-27-08

Riders,

Come on out for the After Christmas ride! Now that ole Saint Nick has returned to the North Pole, we can return to a sense of normalcy around here. I’m sure everyone getting this email was on the Santa’s nice list… that means you probably found some cycling bling under the tree…. so, come show the group what you got!!!! And what better way to burn some Christmas Calories??? I’m sure everyone ate “their fare share”…

As of now, the only thing you won’t be able to show off is COLD riding gear… as the weather dot com site says the high will hit 61 or so on Saturday… that’s perfect riding weather for December, eh??? And it’ll sure beat last Saturday’s weather of the light drizzle that turned the group back at Mac’s… that was after fixing the flat tire of our The Phenom!!!! I’m sure January & February will give us a chance to bundle up!!!!
Props to the new rider who joined us... first ride on a brand spanking new P2C DA... a beauty of a bike... and he rode it with the threat of drizzle!!!! and the new rider did very well on his maiden voyage.... I'm sure we'll see a lot of him over the next 11 months...

The route remains the same… some 40 miles or so…

See ya Saturday?
“one more week till training”

Saturday 12-20-08

Riders,
For those of you who are not running with Fred or riding the Sullivan Charity Ride.. which are great causes... you have an option to join our little group riding from New Spring at 0900. We'll ride our nice Northern Anderson County roads for about 40 miles... after that, everyone can gear up to do battle with the shopping craze that is sure to continue for a few more days....

As Christmas approached, I hope the "big guy" in the red suit has your name on the "nice" list and preparing to leave you plenty of cycling gear, running gear or swimming gear... or maybe all THREE!!!!

Whatever your pleasure is... enjoy this Christmas with family and friends.... (of the two-wheeled persuasion!!!)

Merry Christmas, everybody!!!

Ride for 12-13-08

Riders,
I know there’s the Reindeer Run at the Anderson YMCA this Saturday… and for those who will participate, good luck… for the others of us who’ll ALWAYS pick riding… we will RIDE again… this Saturday, join us at New Spring parking lot for the wheels to roll at 0900. Ride remains the same of about 40 miles, give or take…

Last week, we had a HUGE group... and one rider came all the way from G’ville… and we had TT-Bob back as well as Nascar Dave. And believe it or not, Iron Mike and The Promoter joined us…
So, who’s in for SVR this Saturday?

DISCLAIMER: Mr. Nasty Cold has thrown me under the bus… I’m nursing myself back to health and it appears that I’ll be able to ride... actually, more spinning than riding… but, if I have a relapse over the next 24 hours… I’ll stay home… or maybe only go to Mac’s…
Can anyone guess who's bike shop this is?? It's Lance's... yes, "the Lance" Armstrong's bike shop.. this pic comes from Chasse... who rode to Texas on her bike!!!! rumor has it that she really enjoyed riding "third shift"!!!!!
One more thing... if you enjoy reading race reports... check out this blog... it's pro triathlete Peter Kotland's blog... two of his UltraMan race crew members posted reports from this past UltraMan race.. talk about tough!!! here's the connection.. http://peterkotland.blogspot.com/
and Peter lives "just up the road" in Moore, SC!!!
Keep riding, running and swimming... everyone else is!!! right??

12-6-08 Ride

Riders,

What do you get when you cross 10,000 Thanksgiving calories with a “rained out” SVR for last weekend? Some pain and suffering the next time you get on the BIKE!!! Which will be this Saturday….

On a good note, Clemson HOME football games are OVER and once again, our back country roads will be ours to claim. So, as most folks decide to get that “second” cup of joe… we’ll be layering on the cycling clothes to make our morning ride more enjoyable…

So, saddle up for more fun than you’ve had all week. Once again, on 12-6-08, we’ll meet at New Spring Church parking lot for a “wheels up” ride time of 0900… Come ready to ride. Our route remains the same, and I declare a short cut by turning left at Yoders going into Pendleton. Mostly because of a commitment I have on Sunday… which puts limits on what I do on the SVR…

The mission is to continue to build base miles… cuz in a few weeks, it’ll be time to “kick it up a notch”… if there’s anything left to kick!! So, don't you need base miles too?

Of note, if you’re feeling a bit empty (calorie wise)… Concord Baptist Church is hosting a pancake breakfast starting at 7:30AM to raise money for AIM (Anderson Interfaith Ministries). This is a fund raiser to assist the organization in meeting the needs of others less fortunate than most of us. So, you can “lock and “carbo-load” and be ready to ride!!! Cost is $5 at the door.

Santa Run

Riders, Runners, et al.
Here's a message from Fred and Vance. This event will be an example of living "it's better to give than receive."Merry Christmas everyone, please mark your calendars for Saturday December 20th for the first ever tri training run and good cheer spreading. The idea behind this is to get our group of runners, cyclist, and triathletes together for some holiday cheer and spreading some good cheer through random acts of kindness. We ask that all participants bring either cash or gift cards that will be given away randomly to anyone you see throughout our "run" (little kid, people stopped at traffic lights, someone waiting on a bus, etc.) There is no set amount for anyone, just do what you can or just come along for the fellowship. Most are planning a little note attached to the currency denomination or gift card wishing the recipient a merry Christmas and asking them to pass the good cheer forward. Everyone is encouraged to wear Santa hats or other Christmas garb. We will meet at the new courthouse steps downtown Anderson at 9:00 and start to run from there. The whole "workout" will probably last about one hour or until all the good cheer has been given away. Please respond to this e-mail and let us know if you plan to participate and also invite anyone who is not on this list that you think would enjoy this.Like they said, pass this along to others who you know.
post a comment if you have a question.
