Pick Your Poison

As previously stated, the SVR will yield to two great events: 1) The Safe Harbor Ride in Iva, SC and 2) The Middle Tyger Tri. I hope you have registered for one of the events. The Safe Harbor ride is the fastest metric around…. With plenty of riders to take their turn at the front…. The group will pull you along so you can set a PR.

The Middle Tyger Tri is part of the Upstate YMCA tri series… it’s 400 meters in the pool, 14 miles on the bike followed by a 4 mile run… As Mr. Gurrie asked, What's up with all the fours??? I guess we'll find out early Saturday morning!!! I plan to be up at 0430, have coffee and a bagel, on the road by 0500, arrive at 0600 to participate in event at 0700!!! We have a few others from the area who'll join Mr. Gurrie, Me and Bro...

Wanna sell a bike? Here’s someone who’s interested in the following… On the next SVR and lake swim announcement emails, could you please ask if anyone is selling a road bike? Or maybe you already know someone who is? A colleague of mine is looking for a 52 or 53cm that's been well maintained. He is pretty open to brand and components. Post a reply to the blog and I'll have him call you... or you call him?? (email addresses aren't posted for EVERYONE to see)

Of note, last weekend, I broke a cardinal rule… during our stop in P-ton, Gizz talked everyone into riding Simms Mill Rd… I usually stick to the tried and true…but, I must confess, Simms Mill added a new dimension to the ride…. I think we’ll go back next time!!! And we were able to add a few more miles going BACK to Mac’s for the second time… that allowed us to get in 52 miles!!! sa-weet!!! (actually, that’s a reference to the home made cookies Mac’s sells for some carbo reloading!!!)
Props to Ryno... at the last minute, he looked at me and said he wanted to make me KoM!!! I followed his wheel for as long as I could... we caught the group "asleep at the switch".... but, Griz took the victory!!! I'll work harder and smarter next time!!!

Props to Mr. Taylor... who finished 8th (as I recall) in the 24 hour MT Bike Race in Georgia... no kidding, as I recall from a race report... he rode ~170 miles in 22 hours... and had 2 hours of "downtime"... AND he raced SOLO, and SELF-SUPPORTED... and props to Mr. Breu... who competed in another single track Mt Bike Race, in the rain as I recall???
Props to Florida Bill for the art work...and if things workout on 5-31-08... He's gonna change his name to Carolina Bill!!! No kidding... BEST OF LUCK!!!

So, whatever you do, ride, tri or enjoy the family... be safe and see you on the road next week!!!

oh yea, the Anderson Tri Club will have a meeting next week...

So, you wanna ride??

For those of you who are not riding “Challenge of the Centuries” are you ready for “Mac Smith’s Times Two?”… yes, I would like to get just a few more miles on Saturday… and the best way to do that is to “haul it” out to Mac’s AGAIN… just like the old days when Mr. Name-Sake was riding. So, let’s dust off those bikes and get ready to ride!!! Our group meets in the parking lot of New Springs for a roll-out time of 8AM sharp. Our “usual” loop is ~44 miles, give or take and adding the second “leg” to Mac’s gives “just a few more miles”. The pace ranges from 16.61 to 20.02 mph, depending on who shows up and what they might be riding. You know, there's a literary term for "words" that spell the same word backwards and forwards... like radar... or mom... or dad... and speaking of dads... we have a new FIRST time dad in the SVR ranks... BIG Dave Bartoski!!!! congrats!!!! now, will we ever see him again????

Here are props to Brooks, who brought home “some real race hardware” from the Beast of the East ½ IM Tri!!! and to Rocketman who can ride fast on a flat-front-tubular-tire.. no joke…maybe he'll tell you the story??
Here's a shout out to Mr. Rick Taylor... Best of luck with your 24 hour Mt Bike Race... I'm thinking it's this weekend???

And props to Griz, the ultimate lead-out man for the Mac’s Smith sprint zone… will he do it again??? All I know, he was working with 50% lung capacity (he was coughing up the other half), on stock Easton wheels, no power-tap or cycle computer and took the 10 percenter to the launch pad... 5..4...3...2...1... BLAST OFF!!!!

Here’s a word of caution to you super-heroes of the group… you have cartoons, comic books, bedsheets and you have super fans… some super fans will leave their mark in the weirdest of places… check the blog for evidence that if you ride SVR, you just might develop a fan base who’ll support you in races!!! Right Spidey??? You may end up looking like the racer here!!!

A reminder… next week, the SVR will yield to the Safe Harbor Ride in Iva, SC and the Middle Tyger Triathlon…. Two excellent events worthy of participation.

Come one, come all… if you’re new to the group, give us a shout and we’ll keep an eye on you during your first ride…

NOTE:.. here's a nice entertaining video of someone in T1... rumor has it, that's the only "SLOW" place the Rocketman... is that him?? you be the judge...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-H18AGvsS0&feature=related
CR1 Shuey wants to ride Monday... but, some of us have to work... give him a shout if you want some miles...
One last work of art... does anyone know who this is???

Ride Info for 5-17-08

Riders,
tighten your quick release levers and put it in the big ring.. let's turn the cranks!!! we're ready to ride!!! This Saturday, we'll gather ONCE again in the parking lot of New Spring Church to get a few road miles. We leave at 8:00am SHARP. If you're late, you'll have to work to catch us. For me and the "regulars", we'll stick to the "regular" route that lays claim to fame of the SVR. For the "irregulars", they might choose an "irregular" route. Last week, we had 3 expeditionary forces that went 3 different ways. One went NORTH, one went SOUTH and the other went out & back to Pendleton.

The SOUTHERN force logged 98 miles... including a double chili-cheeseburger and fries... and they say they're in training??? Someone said they were "re-conning" the Iva Ride... What we really want to know is why not 2 more miles? Maybe the needed to include a run??? I think we should ask them!!! The NORTHERN force logged 60 miles, including up Glassy Mountain... and our international rider had an 11-21 cog set!!! hmm, makes me wonder if that group didn't decide on that "trip" at the last minute??? Who needs vertical when you can have all the rolling hills of the SVR???... and the out & back force was able to ride, go home and had the rest of the day before other groups returned to the parking lot.... I think the "out & back" were the smartest of all the riders!!!

This weekend, bro is coming back to ride... and he's riding his new rig... He'll lead his OWN expeditionary force up Scotts Bridge Rd to Mac's and take an alternate route to P-ton. I'll join his group once we get into P-ton. I'm going to burn all my matches going to Mac's... then, I'll suffer to P-ton and recovery with bro.... what a great ride!!!!

Perhaps this weekend, we'll have a few more join our group like Francisco Dave, Bridge-Runner and Bass (Guitar) Man... who knows, maybe even Wheel-less will be there??? Funny thing, Wheel-less has been absent so much, we had a rider even ask if Wheel-less really rode???

NEWS FLASH... On May 31, the SVR will yield to the Safe Harbor Ride AND the Middle Tyger Triathlon.

Here are the details. Safe Harbor. which is the shelter for abused women and their children in Anderson, is having a Cycle Event on May 31 in Iva, SC. It is a 25 mile and 65 mile ride and will have the mass start at 8:30 a.m. The event won "best cycle ride in the upstate on the beautiful, country roads in Iva, SC". It is a fund-raiser for a shelter which served 140 women and children last year and gave them a safe place to go when they had to leave a dangerous, threatening environment. We are impressed and grateful to cyclists who seem to want to participate in an event which has a worthy cause
Pre-registration is $30 and $35 on the event day. Registration on line is http://www.blogger.com/ and the e-mail address is http://www.blogger.com/. If you have any questions please call the shelter, (864)-261-3633, or Betty Lewis at (864)-375-1474. Thank you for this consideration.

The Middle Tyger Tri is a sprint Tri at a YMCA in Duncan... 400 meter swim, 14 mile bike (out & back) followed by a 4 mile jog on small rolling hills (OUCH!!!)

By the way, if you're of the "tri-ing" type... join the YMCA tri club... we have swim clinic every Wednesday from 6 to 7pm... that's when Coach Land develops our swim skills... http://andersonytriclub.googlepages.com/

See ya in the parking lot, for sure, eh?

Ever wonder what happens on the Tuesday Night Ride??? well, this past week, a youngster proved you can't beat youth!!! Bob A. and I "caught" him as we turned onto 5-Forks.. I say caught him... but, really he was waiting on us... he drafted for a while and told us how happy he was to be riding... just 5 weeks after heart surgery.. no kidding.. he had a valve job ( a valve repair via a robotic arm?) and was on the bike.. drafting and talking up a storm... just 5 weeks from being on the table!!!! Under the knife!!!! he was glued to our wheels... ah, the pleasures of youth or the wisdom of age.... hmm, what would you chose?

Ride for May 10, 2008

Roll Call....
who's ready for some weekend miles? A few of our email recipients are Clemson Bound for the triathlon.. Best of luck to Wanda, Nelson, Brooks, Nate, Chasse, Nancy, Lori and the relay team of Bob, Vance and a swimmer... BRING HOME some hardware!!!! There are a few other names listed on the SETUP EVENTS page....from our local area... such as old War-Horse himself... and Mikey... haven't seen these guys in FOREVER... if you guys race, good luck.. if you don't send me the money you wasted for registration!!!
For the rest of us, we'll meet for usual tried and true ride of about 45 miles, give or take. We roll out at 0800 SHARP from the parking lot at New Springs. The first few miles are in the neutral zone and after that, game on!!! LOL... NOT really... but, it makes for a good email, don't you think? Note, there is one sprint zone... as we approach Mac Smiths, the sprint zone FINISH line is the "stop ahead sign".. the starting line is anywhere BEFORE the finish line... if you start to early, you'll "peter out".... if you don't respond to others, they'll drop you.. it's the best "cat & mouse" game EVER.... after that, the ride is a pleasant spin for me....
Our group divides out among various abilities range, with average speeds for 45 miles of 16.5 to 20+mph.... We'll regroup at a few points along the way. Rumor has it that Rocketman and Spidey will head for the hills after riding to P-ton with us... and just speaking for myself, they can have all the hills they can climb, including Maw Bridge Rd... that's not what I'm about.... give me flat-land, a few rollers and more than one wheel to follow!!!! life of a roadie... ain't it great??

If you're new to the group, let us know and we'll keep an eye on you as you learn the route... THEN, when you come back, you can keep and eye on the next new rider.... it's kinda like "paying it forward"... you help someone and then that someone will help another person... and from my experience this past Tuesday, I owe someone a tire change!!!! cuz I got great assistance from a great bunch of riders when I flatted going into P-ton..

Congrats to last weeks White Lake 1/2 IM racers.... Spidey (formerly known as Fast Freddie)... Wheel-less Whaley, Big Dave and Mrs. Griz had strong showings for very long distances in not too pleasant weather... (FWIW, 1/2 IM is 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run)

about this weeks pic.... fast Nancy coming in for a dismount... and fast Vance... STANDING STILL... you don't see that often!!!!!

They Went That Way!!!

Here's a nice pic of our volunteer at the Anderson Tri pointing the racer in the right direction... For this weekend, she'll be pointed in the direction of NC as she races White Lake.

Come join the finest group of riders ever to throw a leg over the top bar!!! That's right, the riders of the SVR (Saturday Velo Ride) will gather at the parking lot of New Spring for an 8AM ride roll-out time. The route is about 45 miles of excellent roads and scenery. The group ride averages between 16 to 20+mph. there's something for everyone.

We'll miss three of our "regulars" as they chew on the challenge of completing the White Lake 1/2 IronMan in North Carolina. By the time our peleton rolls out, they should be finished with their swim and on their bikes. Best of luck to Wheel-less Whaley, Ms. Griz, Big Dave and Ruth Marie's little brother (aka Fast Freddie).. they say, once you cross the border, thing change.... or perhaps the motto should be... "what happens at White Lake, stays at White Lake!!"

Be ye warned, I have an non-cycling obligation this Saturday. So, I'll be with you in spirit. May the force be with you. Racing, Riding or Whatever you do.
Last weeks ride was great... about 10 riders showed up and we had the road to ourselves. Renato towed the paceline to the sprint zone... that's when the surprise of the year happened... two middle aged YOUNG men geared down, swung wide left and hammered to the "stop ahead" sign... we figured if Renato took us the line... someone needed to finish the job... best 11 seconds of their life!!! At least that's their story... and they're sticking to it...

Someone, please post a ride or race report. Even if I'm not riding, I still want to read about it!!!
