A change

It's Monday and I'm already looking forward to the Tuesday Night ride... starting in Pendleton.... and I just thought I'd tell you a small change I've made... at the end of the TRI 101 clinic, us "newbies" went out to dinner after the last "class".. nice Italian place on E Greenville St... that's when I saw Coach Land eat 1/2 of his dinner and box up the rest??? I asked him about that and he remarked today's portions are "gracious plenty" and 1/2 is all he needed for dinner... AND he'd have something for the next night!!!!

So, fast forward 4+ weeks... on Friday night, my wife and I dined at The Olive Garden... had a nice salad, bread sticks and the entree... BUT, I cut my portion in 1/2 and decided to take the rest home... after dinner, we ran a few errands and I'm happy to report that I felt "full, but not stuffed"... is a great moment!!!! and I had a nice lunch the next day!!!

So, the next time we go out... I think I'll try it again???

one more tri trick...

4-26-08 Ride Data

Let's keep this on the down-low... I figure if we do that, maybe we'll avoid Mother Nature... I haven't quite figured out the every Saturday weather "event"... but, something is UP!!!! Once again, there are sources out there that leads me to believe WE CAN DO IT... that is, finish before the old hag makes her arrival and unleash what makes misery for us Road Riders... the misery is dirt, grime and just nasty gunk all over the two wheel gas saving weekend machines of fun...

Here's a young guy celebrating a win!!! Congrats to Sir Storie on a fine showing at the Greenwood Tri!!!!

Be ye warned, there's a pic below that could cause some problems to the squeamish readers... so, moms and dads guard this post...

So, who's up to temp fate?? and who has some time to clean up afterwards??? I'm IN, unless SHE gets here before roll out time... So, meet the group at New Spring parking, ready to ride at 0800 SHARP... the route is a classic, so no change there.... We'll have a few re-grouping points along the way... the top of Timms Mill, Mac's, downtown P-ton and one or two more along the way... different groups ride between 16mph to 20mph for the entire 45 miles... give or take...

Let us know if you're a new rider to the group...and we'll keep an eye on you as you learn the route... cuz you'll have to look out for someone next weekend!

PS... if you are the tri-ing type, check out the local Anderson Area YMCA tri club website... http://andersonytriclub.googlepages.com/

NOTE: our current swim option is pool swim... and after this pic, I think I'll stay in the pool. On Wednesdays, our coach puts us club members through some swim drills to either break you down, or develop your stroke... this past week, he tried to develop our kick.. but, for me.. it just didn't happen...
The lesson from this pic is.. if there's a NO SWIMMING sign posted... DUE TO ALLIGATOR... there is one man who suggests you follow instructions.... no kidding...

Saturday Ride 4-19-08

Riders,
I wish I had a nickel, I wish I had a dime, I wish I had a sun that would shine all the time (at least every Saturday!!!) Actually, I wish I could ride as fast as this pictured rider, Rocketman!!! I can't figure out how his feet are pointed inward AND he's still able to ride fast and straight??? some kind of advanced physics? or biomechanical principles still yet to be understood...

What kind of cycle are we in??? I'm talking about the weather cycle... Last weekend, the weather teased 8 riders to come out to ride... Ryno and THE Knight of the Round Table met us on the road for a few miles. We even entertained an out of state guest from Georgia. Everyone cooperated except for Mother Nature... she wasn't due to show up until 12noon or so... however, she arrived early and BOY was she angry... just who invited her anyway, she doesn't ride??? She came rolling in just about the time we crested WaterTower Hill... she dribbled a little liquid sunshine on us, then decided just to pour it on!!! The 3 of us off the back decided to take a short cut to Liberty Hwy... Apparently, Mother Nature decided she need to get our attention, so she threw around some lightening bolts and loud clamps of thunder... we stuck Tony on the front and he led us home... Bob was the ONLY smart one and he headed for shelter... Tony, no offense, but next time I'm following Bob's wheel.

Now, I hear that Mother Nature is coming back... she sure can mess up a bike!!!! That's all we need after a long ride, more hours in the garage cleaning up rims, brackets, brakes, tires, tubes, shoes and seat bags...

However, if by some miracle she stays away, we DO PLAN on riding this Saturday, 4-19-08. We start at 0800 from the parking lot of New Spring's Church in Anderson, SC. The route remains the same. Weather permitting, some riders will go for ~60 miles as they train for White Lake 1/2 IM. For me, that means we'll put Whaley up front and draft his wheel the whole way....

Just in case you have forgotten our route.. it's about 45 miles (give or take) with a few regrouping points along the way... let us know if you're new to the ride... and we'll watch out for you.... the average ranges from 16mph to 20mph for the entire ride... and we have a few points of interest where you can burn a match or two...

Stay tuned... watch the weather

Another comment about the pic of Rocketman at the Anderson Tri... he was part of a relay team... his daughter did the swim and his 8 year old son did the 5 K!!! in 23 minutes!!! NO KIDDING...

http://andersonytriclub.blogspot.com/

Just a few comments about the ongoing developing tri club at the Anderson YMCA. This past week, our coach joined in the water fun workout. I guess he thinks because he's IN the water, actually doing the drills and sets, he can "push" the envelope.... for this week, the trick he pulled was for each swimmer to do his "own" IM... that 25 yards of butter, back, breast and free....X 2!!!! it was a classic... the question is..."would I do it again??? and the answer is YES, if YOU'LL join us!!!! so, if you're of the "tri-ing" nature and a member of the Y.. join the club and have some water fun... (applications are at the front desk)

This Just In

They say on ST, "pictures please, or it didn't happen"... that said, here's proof that Wheel-less is a tri guy... notice the number markings, the clip-ons and that concentrating look... the real proof is NOT really Wheel-less, per se.. it's the guy in the back and the safety cones... that said, this pic has a high degree of probability that it is an actual competition photo...
Best of luck in G'wood...

Saturday Ride 4-11-08

NOTE: the message is the same, but the words have been changed....

Okay, let's try this... rain rain stay away come again when we have to work... it doesn't rhyme, but you understand... mother nature kept most everyone inside last Saturday... and some think she'll do the same this Saturday...
But, if Mr. Sunshine pokes through the clouds, be ready to ride!!! NOTE, the ride time has been moved up to 8AM. Our group will meet at the parking lot of New Springs and rollout on time. Our route is a classic, so no changes there..... sorry Rocketman

Props to those who made last Sunday's Anderson Tri a huge success... racers, relays, volunteers and supporter... it was an awesome time... and believe it or not... The Vortex came out of retirement and had a great showing.... that's one out of retirement and one more to go!!!! Right Mr. Name-sake???

Well wishes for those going to the Greenwood Tri... for kids on Saturday and "bigger kids" on Sunday morning... Wheel-less is going for a "fitness measurement" before WhiteLake..... I hope you find Greenwood the right size!!!!

and if you find yourself (and your wife) in the Windy City (aka Chicago) at a trade show this weekend... eat some good food, enjoy the sites and come back ready to ride on Tuesday!!!

See ya in the parking lot, at Mac's, on the square and at Timm's Mill... (cuz those are the regrouping points)..

Just a note about the tri club... even though our hometown race is over... the tri club meets every Wednesday at 6pm for a group swim... we have Coach (or President) Land on deck and he instructs us on some wicked drills.... close fist swimming, one arm pulls, 7-5-3-1 stroke breathing and at the end.... 50s on one minute X 8... so, check out the details of the club .... (of note, Land meets you "where you are" in terms of swim work... so, there's something for everyone)... and there are MORE TRIs out there to try...

JJR for the SVR this weekend

Riders,
As previously announced, this weeks SVR will yield to the JJR (Jubilee Joy Ride) that starts in Pendleton. I hope you are registered for the ride. There will be a group of SVR regulars who plan to meet at the start for a rollout time of 0830AM SHARP. The group will begin together and then groups of riders will sort themselves out according to the mission of the day... hammering, touring, or sight seeing.

Please note, next week, the SVR time will change to 0800... so, mark your calendars, tell your friends.

Just a note about last weeks ride... the weather man GOT it wrong... he said the rain would arrive after 12noon.. a group of about 15 (including new Daddy-Rick) rolled out with ominous clouds in the area... we arrived in Pendleton just to hear some rumblings of thunder... somewhere on Bishop Branch Rd, the skies began to open up... and on Wilson Rd, it was raining... after WaterTower Hill, it was raining harder...flashflood pictures rain through our minds... there were streams going across the road.... We had never been wetter... it was a case of "deeper the river, wetter the water". It was a 3 hour ride followed by a 2 hour bike clean-up... At the suggestion of Bill, I took off my tires, drained my rims, and frame and allowed everything to dry... stuff the shoes, seat bag and other things with newspaper to ensure everything would dry out... in my best southern slang, "it was a mess"... and I don't care to repeat that again... ever..

Don't forget the Tuesday Night Ride is back and many riders have shown up... leaves 6PM from the square in Pendleton.

Best of luck to those "doing your thing" this Sunday at the Anderson Area YMCA tri event... and props to ALL THE VOLUNTEERS... you make Sunday possible!!!! It's still not too late to volunteer.... and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself as you see others going all out, leaving nothing behind... enduring some serious suffer-a-rama... and a few, just a few will actually be enjoying it.... whatever "it" is... contact Land at landh@andersonareaymca.org
Just a note about this artwork... props to Bob for providing it... after his "close encounter" with the beast of the wild kind. Recently on a ride out in the rural areas, he was "jumped" by a pack of deer.. no kidding... so, you need to be careful out there!!!!

See ya on the road,

"the 10 percenter"
