** This is a warning posted by the National Stanland watch group- The Stanland watch for the SVR (Saturday Vance Ride) has been upgraded to a warning. A warning means that conditions are very favorable for a Rick Sighting. The sighting should only occur early during the ride and chances of a sighting are greatly decreased as the ride continues.

Dr. Ferrari Speaks Out!

I greatly appreciate Bob mentioning me in connection with his stellar TT performance at Kowes Motor Speedway. I do think the Arnge Krush contributed in a very small way, however it is the WAY Bob trains that is the real story. The guy has a tremendous work ethic. He borders on overtraining, but that is just the nature of the beast. A lot of cyclist I know say they lift weight, and maybe they do in the off season, but Bob attacks the weights with ferocity. The morning of the TT he was in here doing Leg Presses with 3 wheels on each side for mega-reps. He tweaked his back recently and I had to practically restrain him from the weights for a day. The work that I do with Bob is just icing. I offer suggestions on certain lifts in relation to his rides, I help with his pre-post event supplementation and do his sports-massage as needed. What I am able to offer is knowledge of the supplements I sale, with explicit instructions on how and when to use them. Vance Rowland was kind enough to give me an endorsement regarding the supplementation advice and massage therapy I have done for him over the years. Here again is a guy who has never forgotten his roots in the gym. He was a bodybuilder and a power lifter. He is able to call upon that anaerobic background when necessary. He is the triathlon equivalent of the Terminator. By that I mean he meticulously evaluates all of the variables, uses what will get the job done and throws out the rest. I take great satisfaction in helping people achieve their goals. I invite all of you to come and visit my facility in Abbeville, SC. I have a triathlon specific training area in the works for ’07. Let me know if you might be interested. I carry several endurance supplements like Biobuilde, Optygen, Recovery Stack, Ultragen and, of course, Arnge Krush! I doubt anyone will beat my prices, let me know if they do. Matt Helton, owner. Axioma Fitness of Abbeville. 864-366-2946

Wednesday Ride June 14th from the YMCA @ 6:30

We'll leave the YMCA at 6:30pm and follow the same initial route as last week. Exit the Y onto Reed Rd, to Harriet Circle past Midway Elementary to Midway Rd. Briefly on Midway to left onto Crestview Rd. Stay on Crestview to Hwy 81, then right onto 81 for about 1/2 mile to a left onto Shackleburg Rd. Take Shackleburg past NewSpring Church, cross Concord Rd and go to 4-way stop at Scott's Bridge Rd. Take left onto Scott's Bridge and it will merge onto Dalrymple. Take Dalrymple to Five Forks, and then veer right onto Rogers Rd heading to Mac Smith's.Mac's can be the turnaround for those going shorter or slower. Those going faster or longer might want to turnaround there also, but add extra distance on Five Forks Rd before heading back towards the Y. Ron and I did this last week, while the other 3 riders simply re-traced the route back to the Y.

New Record @ Lowes Motor Speedway TT Series broken by one of our own Bob Chambers

This is quite an awesome accomplishment. Considering some of the challenges Bob Chambers has fought and overcome this is border-line miraculous. It wasn't long ago that Bob was recovering from major injuries from an bike accident involving a car. I'm sure there was a time when Bob's riding future was questioned. All questioned were officially answered Tuesday Night when Bob Chambers obliterated his AG course record by 15 seconds. This TT course is 7 loops (10 miles) of the speedway. Huge Congratulations to Bob Chambers! Way to represent our group and the area- We are super-proud of you! Below is a excerpt from Bob's report..

"My previous best was 21:42. If I recall correctly, the old course record set just a few weeks back was 21:31.

The new course record is 21:16.343 ... set and held by ME! Do that math. 28.2 mph! And folks ... it was quite blustery out there. Far from perfect conditions. As evidence, my nemesis (the former record holder) did 21:46.

I do need to say a special thank you to my new training associate, Dr. Ferrari, aka Matt Helton. I worked out at his gym in Abbeville this morning (wonderful place, by the way) and told him I was doing this TT. He told me I had to try this stuff called "Orange Crush." I don't know how much it helped me on the TT (I suspect quite a bit, actually), but I know for sure it helped me on the drive home and it's why I'm awake and typing this at 12:35 a.m.

One final neat item. As I was packing up to leave, there was a Hincapie Sports team guy loading up his P3 with his dimpled Zipp disk two spaces down from me. I heard him on his cell phone telling someone he just did a personal best time of 21:26. I guess those Hincapie guys are just pikers. ;-) (OK ... it's time to humble myself.)"

Wednesday Ride from the YMCA

For those of you interested in riding tomorrow evening (Wednesday), I'll be leaving from the YMCA at 6:30pm sharp. It looks like the group ride from the bike shop is folding up, and for those not able to get over to the Pendleton ride by 6:00pm on Tuesdays, this might be an opportunity to get in a mid-week ride.We can compromise on the route, but I'd probably stick to most all the roads we're already familiar with. Church traffic may be something we'd need consider as we plan the route. If this sounds like something you're interested in, or would like to see evolve into a regular routine like the well-established Tuesday night Pendleton ride, let me know your thoughts. I'm willing to start the ball rolling, but am not interested in being the captain of every ride. I can't guarantee I'd be able to ride every Wednesday, but I'm definitely interested in a group ride leaving from Anderson at least one night during the week.Hope you can join me tomorrow evening, but if you can't and you have some ideas on what you'd prefer schedule-wise, just drop me a line. Thanks.

Saturday Ride June 3rd- 8am from IVA- Safe Harbor Ride

The Safe Harbor II Ride will leave from the Civic Center of Iva which is located at 205 W. Jackson Street. This is 2 blocks off of the main drag which is Hwy. 81 that runs north/south through Iva. There will be a mass start at 8:30 on Saturday morning, June 3. As for reasons to do this ride, I can guarantee you these are some of the most lightly-traveled and beautiful roads you're going to find in the Upstate -- and I know that's saying a lot 'cuz I've done darned near ever ride there is to do in the Upstate over the years. Plus, it's not a tremendously challenging route, but it will have its moments. If you take note as you drive through this area, Iva is surrounded by lakes. But at the same time, there are all kinds of radio relay towers nearby, and they only put those in high spots. So the ride does involve a few nice hills here and there. Cumulative elevation gain for the metric century is just over 3,200 feet. There's also a 25 mile ride with about 1,400 feet of "climbing" (not that you'd really call it climbing). This ride is through some very historic countryside. We'll circumnavigate Lake Secession which is named because this area is where the seeds of the Civil War were planted. It's mostly rural and agricultural now. There's some recreational activity around the lake. We'll also spend a lot of time in Mennonite country which is peaceful, quiet and well-kept. I'm preparing maps and route sheets, but I plan to mark the route so nobody should have to refer to those. I like to ride fast and I'm nuts about routes being marked properly with arrows well in advance of turns, etc. I'm going to see to it that this course is VERY well marked. It should be a good route for folks who want to come out and blitz a fast metric, as well as a great route to linger and enjoy the countryside. Beyond all that, the ride benefits Safe Harbor which is an organization dedicated to providing temporary safe shelter for victims of family violence and their children. You can pre-register at www.active.com through May 26 for $30 or after that (day of) registration is $35. All pre-registered riders are guaranteed a T-shirt and late registers can get one while supplies last.>>>>>>Bob C.
