Saturday's Magical Ride

Riders,
Saddle up, it’s time to ride… last Saturday was Mike’s Pokey Ride, but this Saturday, we’ll get back to business. Some of the tri guys & gals will take the day OFF as they support the Tri America Race right here in Anderson. GOOD LUCK!!!! NOTE: There's a significant change to the Tri America Anderson Triathlon bike route and it makes the event very appealing... if you thought about signing up, DO SO NOW!!!! The details were posted on the blog a few weeks ago.

The rest of us should come out to ride in their absence. We need a good showing of “roadies” to let the tri guys know it isn’t all about them!!! (just joking….) Actually, the tri events are pretty cool and you should put one on your list to do before retiring from physical activity and moving on to other things. In fact, statistics show that if you do a tri, you’re more than likely to “tri” another one. I think “they” are on to something, for sure, eh!

For this SVR, there will be at least one rider who did his first tri last weekend in Greenville. I’m sure he’d be more than happy to tell you of the adrenaline rush he felt the whole day long… just ask (be ye warned, I’ve heard if you get him started, he’ll never stop talking).

The ride begins at 0800 sharp. We'll ride the same route of about 41 miles... we're such creatures of habit!!!

Come hydrated and prepared to take a pull at the front. Do you like the paceline pic? Pacelining... there's nothing like it!!!! like flying in formation!!! just like the Blue Angels!!! (I guess?)

See ya Saturday,

Mike "526"

PS.. There's a 13% chance I might be tired up with work... but, an 87% chance I'll be there!!!! and I make every effort to R-I-D-E

Saturday Ride 8-18-07

Riders, this is your ride… due to several special events this weekend, several SVR regulars will be absent. We have many folks "competing" in the Greenville Tri and at least one "trying" the Greenville Tri. This includes our locals and those all way from Calhoun Falls to Moore, SC. So, many of the real tri guys & gals will be sleeping in on Saturday.... or doing whatever racers do before races?? Others of us will do some riding.

So, join the fun. Whoever is available should meet us at New Springs for a rollout time of 0800 sharp. As you will recall, I have declared my weekend obligations that will allow me to ride ONLY 20 miles…. at a snails pace…. small chain ring, easy spinning, no out-of-the-saddle efforts and will definitely keep my heart low.

Other riders will continue the tried and true SVR route of about 42 miles.

Here’s a SHOUT OUT to Jeff who will be competing in a 100 mile MT bike race in Ga… and to 2 “junior Grizz’s” doing the kids tri on Saturday!!!

As the true roadie that I am, I’ll be looking for a wheel to follow… won’t it be yours?

Best of luck to everyone for whatever you're doing: riding, racing, volunteering, or taking care of that "honey-do" list.

See ya Saturday.

Mike

PS… thanks to Jeff for providing some digital pics for the blog.

SVR for 8-11-07

Riders,

Last weekend, Gold Medal Man helped me find my legs… (he was the only one who volunteered to look, THANKS!!) they were stashed in Pendleton behind the “changing station.” This weekend, I think I need to find my head… as I lost it in the heat of the TNR (Tuesday Night Ride)…. Truly, anyone riding in 100+ degree heat needs to get some help… At the end of that “suffer-fest” I was Comfortably Numb…

Hopefully, for this weekend’s SVR (Saturday Velo Ride) at least we'll start out with temps in the 70s!!! That’ll be a “cold snap” compared to our recent heat wave.

So, saddle up and get ready to ride. Our group will meet at the parking lot of New Springs for a departure time of 8AM. Last week, the group was HUGE…. Some 24 riders started with us… And we met the “Wine Tasting Tour Training Group” on the road. It really looked like a pro peleton… (well, it kinda did, right? Props to Jeff for the pic) Can you tell "who's who?" Our group will continue to recognize the neutral zone until Timms Mill Rd, then riders will separate according to individual training needs. The loop is ~42 miles, more or less. We’ll regroup along the way…. Near Mac Smith’s, in P-ton and again near Timms Mill and 5 Forks intersection.

This weekend we’ll miss Griz and Mrs. Griz as they’ll travel to Ohio to bring home the 2 little grizzlies.

One last call for you multi-sport types (you know who you are… swim/bike/run folks) to sign up for the Anderson Tri-America Event. Here are the details from Mrs. Griz.

Direct communication has taken place with the race organizers at Sommers Sports today and they have provided assurance the race is ON in Anderson onSaturday Aug 25th (Kids race and Super Sprint(500m, 9 mile bike, 2mile run) and on Sunday August 26th Short course (1500m swim, 18 mile bike, 5 milerun) and Tri America (1.2mile swim, 36 mile bike, and 9 mile run)
There are few athletes registered and almost no-one from Anderson - bragging rights and hardware are up for grabs. WE can't let others come to our area without "us" defending our home turf? right?
They are also in great need of volunteers. You can make it a family fun day!!!!Registration for the race and/ or submitting your name and requested job can be completed at http://www.sommersports.com/ see the TriAmerica link on the left.

As a reminder, I’ve declared next Saturday as my “non-hammer ride”… Due to an already made commitment, on 8-18-07 I will ride 20 miles (out to Mac’s and back) at a very slow spin… in the small chain ring, in the saddle and taking in plenty of fluids… Someone has labeled this as "Mike’s Pokey Ride"….hmmm, and you are EXACTLY right!!! SO, please come out so you can take a pull at the front and I can conserve EVEN MORE ENERGY.

See you early Saturday…. Come hydrated, fueled and ready to roll....

Mike "wanting to stay cool" Madden

see the note below for important details of CR1 Shuey's Ceasar's Head Ride in September.
PS.... the digital pic is actually pro riders in the Tour de Ga... I know you thought is was the "SVR A-train" chugging up Timms Mill...

A Public Service Announcement & Ride Info

Riders,

Here are 3 notes worthy of a quick read...

1. Just a friendly reminder about tomorrows weather. Our resident weatherhound reminded us of "just how hot" it's going to be for the Tuesday Night Ride (TNR) that starts at 6PM in Pendleton. That reminded us of something Ryan sent out a few months ago.... (with a few edits from "the announcer")

Don't Forget to Drink! Stay ahead of the dehydration monster!!!
Its gonna be a hot one out there. So, those of you seasoned endurance sports veterans, having endured many a July of sweltering South Carolina heat, know full well the importance of staying hydrated. Exercising in warm weather, an average person will lose over 1 liter of water every hour. We are more prone to heat and hydration related maladies. That said..... (we've all heard it before, and we'll all hear it again) .... top off those water bottles with lots of electrolyte filled fluids and keepsipping! Bring plenty on the bike, and be sure to drink afterwards. Before the ride, make sure your hydration tank is topped off....Watch out for that all-time favorite, drug of choice of endurance athletes everywhere (caffeine) while in the heat. It’s a natural diuretic and you'llbe more prone to dehydration and cramping if you overdo it....

2. **** Here's a future ride that is taking shape, being organized by Scott CR1 Shuey *******

To all interested cyclists/triathletes,
WHAT: A ride to include Paris Mountain and Caesar's Head
WHEN: Saturday Sept. 1, 2007
WHERE: Depart from Furman University no earlier than 8:00am, (and hopefully no later than 8:15)
HOW FAR: Probably 75 miles, +/- 5 miles
WHO: Those preparing for fall centuries, and anyone wanting to experience a challenging group ride

This will be a "no one gets dropped" ride, but everyone will be on their own pace for the two featured climbs. Those of us who are climbers are welcome to wait or reverse course while the rest of us finish the climb. Novice riders are welcome, but you should be able to comfortably ride the SVR.

We'll plan to meet at NewSpring church at 7:00am to leave for Furman by car, truck, and SUV. The bike ride will take at least 4.5 hours, so it might be 1:30pm before we arrive back to Anderson. The bike route will take us from Furman immediately to Paris Mountain for a great "warm-up", and then we'll make our way over to Caesar's Head.

At the summit of CH we'll re-group, then reverse course back to Furman. (If you really want more climbing, you could certainly go over the top of Paris Mtn one more time!)There are at least 7-8 who have expressed strong interest in this ride.

Please RSVP if you intend to ride, skshuey@bellsouth.net and then I'll post more info about who, the route in detail, etc....

3. ****** And here's a note about "my plans" for SVR on August 18 *******************

My Declaration

Riders, let it be known throughout the SVR land that on Saturday, August 18, I plan to do the easiest spin of the year. Due to an obligation I have on Sunday, I will ONLY ride ~20 miles at a very, very slow pace. I have NO plans to get out of the small chain ring or out of the saddle... or to break a sweat... HONESTY...I will ride to Mac Smith’s (via the usual route) at a snails pace... and when I get to Mac's I'm going to stop, get off my bike, buy a Gatorade, eat some carbs and
S L O W L Y ride back to the start... total miles ~21... if you ever wanted to see the route to Mac's Smith's and back, I could use some company.... so, put this one on your calendar...

Stay safe and hydrated.

Ride to Find the LEGS

Where oh where are my legs tonight, why have they left me here all alone….
I’m guessing my legs are still in vacation-land… they definitely didn’t return with me…. Maybe FedEx or UPS will deliver them??? It’s so bad, that I’m considering changing my theme song to Slow Ride by Fog Hat… hmmm, that should tell you a lot about my course of de-training over the past few weeks… Last Saturday was a rain-out for me…but, I understand at least 6 riders DID RIDE… and one of them was Whaley!!! What is this world coming too??? but, never fear, the SVR (Saturday Velo Ride) is HERE…

Yes, this Saturday (8-4-07) a group of riders will meet at New Spring parking lot to help me look for my legs…. We leave at 0800 for a standard loop of about 42 miles, give or take. Once again, we’ll observe the neutral zone until Timms Mill (NOTE: with the way I’m riding, the whole route will be a neutral zone). We’ll regroup at several points along the way, perhaps at Mac Smith’s, on the square in Pendleton and at the corner of Timms Mill and 5 Forks on the way home.

If you so desire, please join us for one of the best Saturday morning activities… the SVR.

And the more riders who show up the less work I have to do…. (spoken like a true roadie)

See ya at the start

Mike
